In 2003, Morrisania Revitalization Corporation (MRC) conducted a community needs assessment to identify the most pressing concerns facing local residents. The survey revealed significant levels of hunger and undernourishment among seniors and people with disabilities in the community. In response, MRC established its Food Pantry with support from City Harvest, its primary partner.
The pantry later expanded through a grant from United Way and is now also supported by the Food Bank for New York City and the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA). These partnerships have enabled MRC to provide consistent access to nutritious food and essential resources for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, MRC kept the Food Pantry open seven days a week to meet the increased demand for emergency food assistance. Services were extended beyond the immediate neighborhood, reaching individuals and families throughout all five boroughs of New York City. MRC’s Food Pantry continues to serve as a vital community resource, helping address hunger and promote food security among vulnerable residents.

Established in 1995, the Martin Luther King Center for Non-Violence serves as the engine of Morrisania Revitalization Corporation’s social services program. From its inception, Cliff Frazer served as the Center’s Executive Director, providing leadership and guidance in developing programs rooted in nonviolence, community service, education, and empowerment. The Center’s work reflects the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the legacy of Ella Baker, emphasizing civic participation, community leadership, service, and social responsibility.
The Center has conducted numerous programs, projects, and events designed to inform, educate, and uplift participants. Its services include job training, job referrals, employment counseling, and workforce development. Job-training programs are conducted in cooperation with the State University of New York’s ATTAIN Lab, helping participants strengthen their skills and improve their employment opportunities.
The Center also hosts cultural and community events, including its annual King Day celebration. In addition, it has provided counseling, guidance, and citizenship classes to immigrants preparing to apply for naturalization. Through this program, approximately 1,000 participants successfully became United States citizens, representing a 100 percent success rate among those who completed the program.
Other ongoing initiatives include workshops and educational programs focused on financial literacy, health and wellness, emergency preparedness, and entrepreneurship. MRC conducts regular outreach to encourage its tenants and community residents to participate, and many have benefited from these services. While the programs support MRC tenants, the workshops are also open to the general public, reinforcing the Center’s role as a trusted and inclusive community resource.
The MLK Resource Center for Nonviolence partnered with SUNY UCAWD to expand access to free vocational training and career development opportunities in underserved communities, including Morrisania in the Bronx. Through this partnership and many others, participants were referred by the Human Resources Administration (HRA) to participate in the program, helping connect residents with valuable educational and workforce development resources.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the MLK SUNY ATTAIN lab transferred learning online. In September 2025 the lab reopened its doors to in person training and continues to provide free technology training, career development, and certification opportunities. The program offers more than 19 learning modules covering occupational skills, academic development, and employability skills.
Participants can develop practical skills in programs such as Microsoft Office and QuickBooks while exploring career preparation opportunities in fields ranging from health care to information technology.
Through its continued partnership with SUNY UCAWD, the MLK Resource Center for Nonviolence remains committed to bridging educational and employment gaps, promoting economic empowerment, and creating pathways to success for underserved residents. The lab will continue to serve as a vital community resource, helping Bronx residents and families throughout New York City build brighter futures.
Since 2020 Morrisania Revitalization Corporation worked jointly with UTOPIA Resource Center Greater NY Inc., to establish a partnership with the New York City Department of Education (DOE) to launch the Morrisania Family Child Care Network. Through this collaborative effort, the organizations were contracted to provide services and support to 50 home-based childcare providers and 299 children. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening early childhood education, expanding access to quality childcare, and providing essential resources and support to family childcare providers and the families they serve.
